Sacroiliac Joint Pain
Sacroiliac Joint Pain (Pregnancy Back Pain)
The human body undergoes significant changes during the pregnancy period, some of which have negative side effects including sacroiliac joint pain. The sacroiliac joint is a strong weight-bearing joint where the sacrum at the base of the spine meets the ilium, the upper part of the hipbone.
During the final stages of pregnancy, the connective tissue that holds the sacroiliac joints together become more elastic due to hormonal changes in the body. The extra mobility in this joint is the culprit of sacroiliac joint pain, one of the most common back pain causes women have to deal with during pregnancy.
Causes of Sacroiliac Joint Pain
- Hormonal changes
- Too much mobility in the joint
- Trauma to the joint
Symptoms of Sacroiliac Joint Pain
The pain associated with SJ pain can be felt on both sides of the lower back where the joint is located, or isolated to just one side.
Common symptoms of pain in the sacroiliac joint may include;
- Dull sharp pain in lower back, hip, groin, buttocks
- Pain down back of thigh
- Stiffness around the joint
- Numbness or tingling in the leg
- Pain going from a seated position to standing
Sacroiliac Joint Pain in Athletes
On rare occasions, some athletes will injure their sacroiliac (SI) joint through incidents such as having their foot caught in a tackle or landing without proper form. This leads to poor use of gluteal muscles and hip flexor muscles during a jump or a fall on the buttock, where direct trauma and force is applied to SI joint.
SI joint dysfunction is very commonly misdiagnosed as it can very frequently mimic low back strain or a disc bulge. Here at The Brisbane Spine Clinic, we have seen far too many cases where other health practitioners fall into the trap of giving patients the easy diagnosis (low back disc degeneration, low back strain…etc.) as a result of a lack of understanding of sacroiliac joint function. Clients were treated incorrectly and their conditions deteriorate very fast with the wrong treatment.
Sacroiliac Joint Pain Treatment in Daisy Hill
Pain in the sacroiliac joint can often mimic the symptoms of other spinal conditions such as a degenerative hip, pinched nerves or herniated discs, which makes it important to undergo a thorough examination to determine the exact cause of your pain.
At The Brisbane Spine Clinic, we believe in supporting and providing the best possible care to our patients. We understand pain in the sacroiliac joint during pregnancy can make it difficult and frustrating to perform everyday tasks which is why we are committed to a problem-solving, results-based clinical approach to get to the root of your condition and achieve measurable improvements.
We offer non-invasive and nonsurgical physiotherapy treatment options to relieve the pain and symptoms brought on by sacroiliac joint pain during pregnancy. Initial treatment options involving physical therapy may help to ease the pain by manually readjusting the joint when it is immobilised or dislocated. We may also provide stabilisation exercises for long-term management of sacroiliac joint pain.
